In early May, the United States classified travel to Germany as security level two, which means taking security precautions against potential terrorist attacks in tourist areas. The Sylt scandal, which involved racist and Nazi slogans during a celebration by a group of young men and women, shocked the German public, but not me. I see racism living among us, walking in the streets, existing in workplaces, and even accompanying us on the phone.

I have tried to report many racist incidents to no avail. In another incident, I signed a letter protesting against the popular and academic repression of supporting Palestine in Germany. I received a response, along with other residents in Germany, expressing concern for our personal safety and advising against revealing our names despite appreciating our stance.
After the events of October 7, the government, police, media, and official and academic institutions did not leave any means untried to intimidate and silence anyone who expressed support for Palestine and Gaza. This reached the point of beating, dragging, and insulting peaceful protesters and did not stop at job dismissals or threats of revoking residency permits and deportation.
Germany is descending to the level of a Nazi security state without shame or attempts to refute these practices. The future does not look promising, as extremism and fanaticism only breed violence from all sides. We must face these challenges with courage and work together to build a more just and peaceful society.
